Build a Door

DoorMatt-3

“When one door opens, another one closes.  If God closes a door, He opens a window.  I’m praying for an open door.” No doubt you’ve heard those phrases or even uttered them yourself.  I really think doors sometimes close on us and God wants us to kick them open.  Or maybe it is like Milton Berle, the famous comedian, once said, “If opportunity doesn’t knock, build a door.”  BRILLIANT!

Today I am getting to do something I have wanted to do for a long time.  It is one of those things where opportunity knocks, the stars align and the door is open.  Choose your metaphor.  Here’s the funny thing about opportunity, we pray for it and look for it but sometimes, when it comes….we make excuses for why we can’t do it.

Trust me when I say, I am the worst!  I’ve got a long list of reasons for why I can’t do something that I really want to do.  “The timing is bad.  I have a family.  Work is really busy right now.  If things were different, I totally would.  If I didn’t have this Jenga tournament to go to, I’d be all over it!”  Okay, that last one has never happened but I wouldn’t put it past me.

The problem is that we say we want an opportunity but sometimes it comes in the form of inconvenience or bad timing.  There are other times when it seems that opportunity isn’t showing up at our door at all.  I love Milton’s advice on that.  “Build a door.”  I would add to that “If the door closes on you, and you know it is something you should do, kick the door open!”

Back to the thing I’m doing today and tomorrow.  Today is a combination of building a door and seizing opportunity when it comes.  It is sort of an intersection between something I really enjoy doing that brings life to me and a door to build.  I will tell you more about this coming week.  Stay tuned!!!
